Stratford & Westfield visit

We started the our first day of the collaboration doing research in the Olympic Park in Stratford and Westfield Shopping Centre. The main object was to find out examples of everyday object that we use and turn it into a game or sports.

An Illustration that I saw which is full of household house. This could be a setting or location of my sporting event.
I also saw this plan which i can relate because I have an idea that I need to create a plan view of the arena or location of the event.
A model of opera house in lego
After the research/browsing of everyday product we then walk around stratford and olympic park to see some inspiration of architecture and planning
A picture of the olympic stadium used in 2012
An iconic building located in olympic park built for tourism during the 2012 olympic

The 1 week we have to create an idea and develop it, plan what things we have to include or maybe create rules to play the game. The first week I mainly did research and planning possible ideas to do an event in my first idea was coat throwing but after taking to the tutor about how to present the game I ended up with "mop hockey"

Design Workshop : Book Cover

At the start of the work shop we were given a list of topics that we can use to associate our research and to produce a book cover using the information that we found. One of the topic was motion graphics which I picked because I am interested in the subject and I want to do it as a degree. Our group was sent to the Study Zone which for a making a book cover and finding resource on my research was a very good place. Which lead me to a great found of a book about motion graphics called The History of Motion Graphics written by Michael Betancourt. This book talked about how the motion graphics era started, using sound and pictures in association and example of artist that inspired the motion graphics movement for example Kandinsky, Auguste Herbin, Andre L'Hote, Leon Zernitsky, Olga Rozanova and Lena Karpinsky.

After doing my research on motion graphics I then looked up some examples of book cover on google images. I picked some of the ones that I think were good or give me some ideas on how I want my book cover to looked like
I then came across a book cover like this, which have continuous design from front to back and I was inspired to do the same on mine
It is a book cover but at the same time it looked like an artwork which most of book cover are anyway however I just felt like this is a different way of connecting the dots.
I also looked upon covers that have quite similarities with the topic that I am using and I found this at the front the book cover used the basic colour scheme use in printing and I want to associate that with the cover of my Motion Graphics book.

This is the final product. I wanted to used the CMYK which stand for the different colour in printing. I started with black to show the history which is the main focus of my research at the moment but however if given the chance I can also do a second book changing the word in the middle from black to cyan. I have chosen black and white so because I want people to focus on the CMYK colour.

Design Workshop : Film Poster

At the start of this workshop the whole group discussed some examples of film poster that already exist and evaluate what is good and bad about it. Our tutor also gave her opinion about the posters that she liked and everyone shared different prospective of what they like on a selection of film poster. The three pictures and the top shows my own evaluation and research about the film posters from the selection that I picked. I found out that I am more into a simple coloured poster that has basic design and silhouettes shapes. I also liked the humor and how the images has been used to convey a story that relates to the film being promoted

The brief gives us a specific film to create a poster with. I liked that they set a specific subject to relate the posters with because it would really show how different you think and compare your work the other people in the group. The subject is "The 33" a film about the Chilean miners that were stranded under the ground.

This is my final product. I put "los 33" to suggest that the characters are not specifically in english or american origin. Through my research I have found out that there were 33 people hence the title "The 33" therefore I decided to use hand prints to represent 33 individual holes that represents each character in the poster. I also found out that Antonio Banderas and other hollywood actors would star on the film therefore I include a little itroduction of them at the top.

Design Workshop : Calligraphy & Wine Label

At start of second week we were introduced to calligraphy a form of art that allows an artist to create his own identity in the form of type. At first I tried to copy the sample given to us and then I move on to the topic that I want to focus on.
I am fascinated by this anagram since I saw it because it was so interesting and playfully put together, it's just genius. The creator design it to be read back and forth. And I like to recreate something like this in this weeks project.

We have to create a wine label from the calligraphy that we produce. Everyone is creating something like a logo which I don't want to follow therefore I experimented on how to put the packaging and the brand in one design. I noticed that wine bottles has paper as a label but it doesn't go along the bottle it only rotates around it so why not go across the whole bottle. This is what I came up with something like a ribbon but maybe created in a sticker like material. The design looks like a random connected lines however if you look close enough you can see that it will spell out earth, water, air and fire all in one. The colour that I use was gold to show quality and style of the brand.

Design Workshop : Type Layout

In this work shop it allow me to show how I can be playful using words which I guess is the main reason why they ask the group to do it in the first place. As you can see I have done different experiments to show my humor and playfulness. I also tried to used different kind of paper and different sizes of letters. I also didn't use colours because I want it to be simple but humorous. I liked the "no more" word but instead of putting it in simple I toke out the "O" in no and put more "O" in more. Another on that I like the most is the h, kl, bc, f ,j ,op and d letters. Try to imagine what it means.

At the end of the project we need to produce a album cover which show that I have briefly done at the picture above. I use tracing paper as a first layer then put the "blurred" type underneath. The idea come up to me when I was tracing a word using a light box and when you lift up the paper it the letters fade.

Design Workshop : Colour & Illustration

Design Workshop : 3D / Laser Cutting

This is the first topic that we did for the 2 weeks workshop. At the start of the day the group was told to go to level 9 to meet our tutor. After meeting the person in charge for the day, first we need to be inducted about all the different machines we can use to produce our work for the day. For me it wasn't really that confusing because I have encountered most of the machines that they have in the prototyping room as I did product design in my 6th form before joining the course including of course the laser cutter which is the main machine we need to use for the project. However they use a different format and software to generate the laser cutter but It was not an issue because the tutor taught us all about it on the day.

I have produced three product which have the same format and word on it but the process that takes to produce it was different. The first one was outline using etching by the laser cutter to show a little pattern. the second one was cut through and the third was fully etched. I decided to present it in an A2 sheet with colourful papers to show the outlined word and to also show how diverse the outcome were.

Manifesto

The brief this week is to produce a personal manifesto that shows what I strongly believe in. For me it was hard to exactly pin point what topic I should associated my manifesto with so I came up with the idea to research some of the people that inspired me and take some of there known quotes and sayings then write it randomly in my sketchbook.
The result was a lot of doodle on a page which gave me a phrase that I can use to show what I believe.

Now that I have a phrase the next step is to think how I will present it. I then research some artist that was associated with graphic design and evaluate how they represent their beliefs.

and because the phrase that I have chosen had significant connection with paint I felt that it would be just right to use it on how I can present my manifesto.

Using a pencil I started outlining the phrase and positioning it into something not normal to give a little curiosity to the people viewing it. The way I positioned the sequences of the phrase was a bit confusing that sometimes I also forget how to read it. I then used a scalpel to slice the pattern forming just a outline of the phrase in a A3 sheet of paper. I then decided to put another A3 sheet beneath the pattern and see what will happen. After cutting the pattern I started to paint it. During the painting I felt kinda bored about the result and the colour combination because it was a bit organize so I decided to put my headphones in my ear and not think about the colour that I use and just go with flow of the music.

Contrary

This week's brief is to produce a short video (1-2 mins) and a poster which is based to a word assigned to the group. Unfortunately I did not have the chance to start the week strong because I missed the first day which was a significant day to generate and share ideas with each member of my group due to the storm that shut down central line and it was the only way I can get to the city. However I received an email which has the group list therefore I have given a chance to talk to some of the group members online the next day and ask them what ideas do they have planned.

The word assigned to my group is "contrary" and during the self direct studies I did a little research. First i tried to search what the definition was to widen my understanding and to also generate some ideas from the word associated with the word.

then I tried to search some images that best describe the topic like this dog that said "meow"

I also watched a short video that I came across during my research.

The next day I finally catch up on the work. The aim was to plan and to produce a story board of the video and hopefully also film it. This is a short version of what happened that day.

My group consisted of people who had a strong opinion and passion on the thing they believe in therefore we couldn't decide on what should be the main focus of the video because we don't agree with the same ideas. However at the end of that day we manage to came up with a plan and presented it to the class.

On my second SDS the whole team decided to meet up and shoot the video, unfortunately only half of the group can make it so we had to do some adjustment. We scratched the whole plan and just created something out of the blue but still on point to the theme. We edited the video half of the video on that day and decided to continue editing the next day so that we can have the other half's input as well.

During that day I have taken the opportunity to develop some ideas about my poster after shooting the video

.
I have chosen to show contrary in a very obvious way which used colour variation suggesting the opposite

This is the end product. The video doesn't have any dialog instead it has background music which we think contradicts the action of the person. It also has added text, edit in to also contradict the fact that it doesn't have any dialog.

I help edit the video and in my personal opinion we did a good job. We have portrayed the meaning of the word we we're assigned with and that is the objective. Although the team did have differences we still manage to came up with a video and through this experience I have also learn to share ideas to a group of people and execute a result which I am proud of

Exploratory Stage Evaluation

I really enjoyed the Exploratory Stage of Design and Media. I have learned a lot from each pathways on how to tackle problems and what is the best way to manage the challenges. Each tutors have different ways to tackle things however they sometimes are the same so I think It really helps that in the first 6 weeks to generate ideas and explore the things that you might be good at but haven't had the chance to do.

During the Rotation I wasn't really keen on the short deadlines because I always find it hard to work under pressure but I do understand that this has to be done. I have also learned a lot of lessons from the lectures that they have arrange and I now have a broad knowledge on how to become the artist that I want to be.

I have chosen to pick Graphics design as my pathway because I always been fascinated by it however I found it hard to choose between 3DD and Graphic because I always wants to be an architect. However when I attended to talk on Graphics I decided on the spot to pick it because of the fact that you can have the opportunity to continue as Undergraduate for Motion Graphics was just a fantastic opportunity for me.

I have learned a lot about the exhibits and learned that if I want to continue growing I have to consistently be active and visit some of the exhibit which are available to us. Exhibitions are not boring, you can actually find yourself and relate to the people who has done a particular pieces of art and the history of it.

Out of all the pathway I think lens base was not really my thing, I do idolized some of the great film maker and director like Stephen Spielberg however I think I have no passion for story telling and it seems just a lot harder than the other pathways.

The contextual writing studies was also great because even though I'm an art student I still have the chance to improve my writing and it is really important to me because English is my second language .

Life Drawing

I haven't done life drawing before and I was a bit conscious about seeing a man or a woman naked however doing it as art didn't actually bothered me as I though it would and I quite enjoyed that experience. As the tutor also said life drawing is always there even if your in degree course or ma course so I figure I have to get use to it as soon as possible.
